Blue Green Algae Monitors

Volunteer monitor, Sally Littlefield, taking a water sample in Shoreham, VT.

Each summer LCC, in partnership with the University of Vermont Rubenstein Lab, trains and oversees citizen monitors who take weekly water samples from select shoreline areas to be analyzed for blue green algae.  This program, which LCC initiated, provides critical data on where and when blooms are happening and is the information public health officials use to assess whether the water is safe for swimming.  They also contribute to scientific efforts to understand what triggers blue green algae blooms and what can be done to minimize them in the future.

Volunteer monitors go out once per week from early July through Labor Day to collect samples and take them to designated drop-off locations.  If you are interested in being a volunteer monitor or supporting this program, please call the LCC office at (802) 658-1414 or email us at lcc@[remove this text]lakechamplaincommittee.org.
