Contribution of Automatic Dishwasher Detergent to Phosphorus Loading in Lake Champlain
The Lake Champlain Committee has released a report that concludes automatic dishwasher detergents (ADDs) generate about 60 metric tons of phosphorus in the Champlain Basin each year. Even accounting for a 90% removal efficiency at waste water treatment facilities and 100% removal from septic systems there are still two to three metric tons of phosphorus entering Lake Champlain solely due to dishwashers.
