Donate to LCC!
In addition to an active membership, the Lake Champlain Committee (LCC) depends on contributions for special projects.
LCC is currently seeking donations to support our work to adapt and respond to our changing climate.
As our climate warms, Lake Champlain changes. Already we have seen a decrease in winter ice cover and an increase in precipitation throughout the Basin. Where once the lake froze over almost every year, it has now been five years since the last freeze over. We already receive an additional three inches of precipitation per year with greater increases anticipated. Increased storm frequency and intensity washes more pollution into the lake. Rain in winter causes even more erosion due to the absence of vegetation to slow run off.
LCC plays a critical role in developing strategies to deal with climate change. In meetings around the region government entities debate how best to prepare for current and anticipated changes, and which policies should be enacted to increase the resilience of the region. LCC is there speaking for the lake. We are the ones thinking about how increased temperatures affect mercury levels in fish; how algae blooms are tied to increased temperature; how species from plankton to fish respond to warming water. Our years of experience and scientific grounding give weight to our views; our voice is respected and sought out.
Your special donation will assist LCC to:
- Work with public officials on a pilot project that will provide examples of good and bad river and shoreline management practices and developing recommendations for infrastructure improvements.
- Re-evaluate how we build structures to manage stormwater and wastewater.
- Plan and adapt today so we can increase the resilience of our lake and our communities for the future.
